This subject provides an introduction to the basic concepts of General Chemistry, including the periodic table, elements, atoms, and states of matter; gases; elementary quantum mechanics, atomic spectra and atomic structure; structure and bonding in elements and compounds of groups 14-18; the chemistry of carbon-based compounds, including structure and bonding of alkanes, alkenes and alkynes, chirality, nomenclature, benzene and its derivatives, functional groups; intermolecular forces; energy and thermochemistry; chemical equilibrium; acid-base chemistry including the strength of acids and bases; physical properties of solutions; solutions and pH equilibria. the jump from vce chemistry is brutal even if you scored well in year 12. the pace does not slow down and the early weeks on molecular structure and spectroscopy set the tone for the whole semester

weekly quizzes keep you accountable but they are also what catches people who fall behind. staying on top of content week by week is the only strategy that actually works here

special on special exams come up every semester which tells you everything about how the cohort performs. the question style requires genuine understanding not vce-style memorisation
