This subject introduces students to the key concepts of finance. Topics include: time-value-of-money, risk and return, present value, capital budgeting, diversification, asset allocation, capital asset pricing model, leverage, risk management and the types and sources of financing. This subject is the first in the sequence of finance subjects offered within the faculty and has a coverage and treatment of material which is suitable not only for students wishing to pursue further studies in finance but also for students from other disciplines who are interested in a single course in finance. final exam looked nothing like practice material for a lot of people - tests application of concepts in novel scenarios not reproduction of tutorial questions. understand the logic behind each formula not just when to use it

probably the hardest first year bcom subject and it earns that reputation. financial maths bonds stocks corporate finance and options all crammed into one semester. you can do well but you need to actually dedicate serious time to it

lecture quality varies heavily by stream and some coordinators assume prior knowledge that first years genuinely don't have. go to consultations early when confused - waiting until swotvac for a subject this content-heavy is too late
