This subject explores the technological theme of steampunk – conceptually, metaphorically, structurally, and technologically – through a set of parameters (the brief). The technical focus will be on game world mechanics, implicit to the theme. Students will be introduced to the theory and design fundamentals of game world mechanics, including functional interactions, movement and body mechanics. Lectures, online modules and studios will introduce students to design theories, techniques, and digital tools related to the design challenges. Design challenges will examine the aesthetics and atmospherics of technology, including retrofuturism, industrialism, combustion and technological anachronism. These challenges will develop students' technical and creative skills in level design, narrative design, mechanics, and art direction. Assignments align with industry norms for game development including game design documentation, game builds and pitch materials. Through the lectures, online modules and studios students will develop technical and creative skills in level design, narrative design, mechanics, and art direction.
